Need help: MAGNETS on boxes?!

From: peedie61 (pedersenteevens@cablespeed.com) | Date: 2005-10-02 14:04:27 UTC
Hello! I'm hoping those of you who have put magnets on a letterbox will tell me what
adhesive works best? I have a Snap N' Lock (by Snapware) container that I'm attaching 4
magnets to the bottom of. I tried a glue that I got at the hardware store that was supposed
to glue all sorts of things.... including plastics and metal. Didn't work. Any suggestions
would be appreciated!! ... also let me know how well the magnets/container bond stood up
to time and weather.

I have never glued magnets to a letterbox, but I have used liquid nails on
outdoor projects and it works great.

Hi PennyPenny,
I have used magnets - but purchased the magnet tape. It has adhesive
on one side and you pull off the protetive paper and the adhesive is
there. I have only done this with small metal boxes that are hidden on
steel supports.

I used regular household cement to glue magnets to a bench, then used an
Altoids tin as the box.

An alternative possibility that I've seen work with stronger (rare
earth) magnets - put them *inside* the box. No way for them to come
loose between visits, and when folks remove the container from its
hiding place the force of their pulling it off is going with the glue
or tape or whatever.

I use super glue to glue magnets tialtoid tind but do
not know how well it will work with plastic.

Try going to www.thistothat.com and see what they say.
It is a great site with gluing suggestions for
everything.

I've used earth magnets (I get them at Lee Valley,
also found them at an Army Surplus store). They are
very strong and very small. I put one on the inside of
an altoid tin box, no adhesive. Then attach the metal
tin to a steel object. I'm not sure how they would
work when placed inside tupperware. I'd probably stick
them to the inside of the tupperware with double faced
sticky tape so the magnet stays in one place once it's
removed from the metal object.
